As a musician, it’s only natural to want to start playing live shows. It’s fun practicing in your own house, but, there’s something incredibly exciting about getting in front of a live crowd.  Finding gigs isn’t as simple as showing up to a bar and announcing you’d like to play, however.

There are a lot of competing brands out there who are also trying to get stage time.  In order to make sure that you get noticed, you’ll need to make sure that you have the right tips under your belt. Take a look at some of the best ways to get your first live music gig.

Attend Shows

One of the best ways to get to know the local music scene is to go check it out for yourself. Put on your favorite shirt and go check out local bands that are playing. Remember, music is all about networking. The more people you know, the more chances you are of getting a foot in the door at a venue. It may take several months of going to shows to get to know who the promoters are and who you need to talk to. However, persistence is everything.

Send Your Demo

Although ultimately, your chances of playing will rely on your connections, it helps to send your demo out to different venues. Usually, there’s a booking email on the contact section of venue websites. Get busy and start sending your demo out to various different venues. Make sure that it sounds professional, and the body of the email you send it in is well constructed too.

A lot of people may not even open the email; however, ultimately, it’s a numbers game. You probably won’t get booked at the biggest venue for your first gig, but you have to start somewhere. Even small cafes are something!

Build a Social Media Following

A social media presence is the best way to give your band credibility. If you approach a venue and show them that you have a significant amount of followers, that means more profitability for them. Ultimately venues care about making money, so if you can show them that you can bring in a crowd, you’ll increase your chances of getting the booking.

Print Business Cards

Business cards are an important part of networking, even for an industry like music. Business cards are a tangible way to get people to remember you. When you put a business card in someone’s hand, they’ll find it in their pocket the next day and remember who you were. Make sure that you include all of your contact information on the business card so people can find you online.

By applying these tips and keeping a positive attitude, you should get your first booking in no time.  Who knows, you might just be the next big pop star!
